An Eritrean opposition group told AFP on Tuesday it was “prepared to launch attacks” on government troops after the United Nations last week imposed tough sanctions on Asmara.

It was reported that the Holloway Road meeting was attended by about 60 individuals out of an estimated base of about 600 in the UK. The few who attended the event expressed their unwillingness to be used in the PFDJ campaign and fund-raising activities. They have also posed serious questions on issues including the prospect for democracy, rule of law and respect for human rights.

The UN Security Council has imposed sanctions on Eritrea because of aid it says it has been giving to Islamic insurgents in Somalia.

The resolution places an arms embargo on Eritrea, and also imposes travel bans and asset freezes on businesses and individuals.
