Eritrea seeks Nigeria’s help over UN sanctions

THE state of Eritrea is seeking Nigeria’s intervention in the wake of the imposition of sanctions on it by the United Nations (UN).

Nigeria assumed a seat as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) in January this year.

UNICEF wants $24.8 million for Eritrean fund

ASMARA (Reuters) -

 The U.N. children’s agency UNICEF is appealing for $24.8 million to expand its programmes in Eritrea, where aid agencies say drought is causing widespread food shortages and child malnutrition.

UNICEF says it will help more than 1 million Eritreans in 2010 — approximately a quarter of the population — with supplementary and therapeutic feeding to “prevent further deterioration in their already poor nutrition status”.

Some $13 million is earmarked for nutrition, UNICEF said in its 2010 humanitarian action [...]

On 23 December 2009 the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) adopted resolution 1907, imposing sanctions against Eritrea in response to the ongoing border dispute between Djibouti and Eritrea, as well as Eritrea’s support to armed groups destabilising and undermining peace and reconciliation in Somalia, which the UNSC determined constituted a threat to international peace and security.

As a consequence, Australian law now prohibits the following conduct:

EU imposes travel and arms embargo on Eritrea

BRUSSELS, March 1 (KUNA) — The European Union Council adopted a decision here today imposing sanctions against Eritrea in line with the United Nations Security Council resolution (UNSCR) 1907 of 2009.

Lanka-Eritrea ties break-down

The Sri Lankan government’s attempt to establish diplomatic ties with the state of Eritrea have diminished due to certain media reports published in recent times, Defense Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa told Daily Mirror online.

“It came out in the papers and now Eritrea has completely shut down everything; they don’t talk to us and they completely cut us off,” the Defense Secretary said in an interview with the website.
